Folk Duo She & Him Are Joining The "Universal Love" Train With New "His & Her" Wedding Songs

We have another update in the ongoing sensation that is Universal Love.

Last month, we shared with you the news that a bunch of singers like Bob Dylan and Death Cab For Cutie’s front man Benjamin Gibbard were changing the lyrics of classic wedding songs and making them into same-sex love songs.

Then, we shared with you Kesha’s music video for her song “I Need A Woman To Love” in which she helped a real life gay couple get married.

Now, it looks like singing duo She & Him are joining the fun.

If you don’t know She & Him, they’re a folk duo made up of actress Zooey Deschanel and musician M. Ward.

The two have recently announced that they’re joining the Universal Love playlist created by MGM resorts with two different versions of the same song.

Specifically, they recently released the new singles, “He Gives His Love to Me” and “She Gives Her Love To Me.”

“What drew us to this project is that it opens up new ways of thinking about songwriting,” Deschanel and Ward tell Rolling Stone. “It would be amazing if our songs help to inspire other artists to engage with lyrics in a more open, and inclusive way.”

Not only is this a great announcement for fans of LGBTQ entertainment media, but this is also exciting news for She & Him fans as the music duo haven’t come out with new music in five years.

This also marks the first original song to join the now growing playlist of songs for same-sex weddings.

If you want to get excited too, you can check out both singles down below.

Watch This Beautiful Wedding Officiated By Kesha

Last week, we shared with you the news that artists like Bob Dylan, Kesha, and Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, were switching the pronouns in classic love songs and making them into the perfect music for a gay wedding.

Now, Kesha has gone a step further by releasing a music video in which she helps a real gay couple get married.

Recently, Kesha shared on Twitter that she was honored and excited to be a part of the Universal Love album. In the album, she sings her version of Janis Joplin’s “I Need A Man to Love,” and gives it the new title “I Need A Woman.”

In the twitter video, found below, she says, “When I was approached for this project, I instantly said yes. It was a no-brainer.”

The singer, who identifies as bisexual, then shared a music video a couple days later.

In the video, Kesha starts out by drying across the desert, but the video also follows real life couple Dani and Lindsay as they have fun in Las Vegas.

Later, the two stories merge, and the music stops, as Kesha marries the two in a beautiful ceremony. (Of course, this isn't the first time Kesha's married a gay couple, so there was a good chance that this one would go smoothly).

Grab some tissues, someone cute to hug (a lover, pet, or teddy-bear), and check out the video down below.

Finally some wedding songs made for LGBTQ love!

Planning a wedding is stressful, no doubt, but where you really die a little bit each time is in the locking in the details that make your moment a special day. For gay weddings, it’s doubly hard. You can’t walk into a store and find groom and groom signage or bride and bride invitations. You either have to custom make things yourself or find someone online who can. And when it comes to finding music that is appropriate, that’s a whole other beast. Sure, there are songs that meaningful to you as a couple, but most have a heteronormative message that fails to consider that gay narrative or that a same-sex couple may want to use it as a wedding song because of the universal theme of love.

My partner and I found this process grueling. We went through hundreds of songs that were meaningful to us, then we broke down the lyrics and realized…all these guys are singing about girls so we were limited to finding female vocals that were singing about a man—still didn’t feel 100% kosher, but we were limited. More about this insane process HERE

With all of this in mind, it’s nice to discover that MGM Resorts has put together a small album entitled Universal Love, that celebrates modern love for everyone and for those who are looking for the right song to make their special day all the more perfect. Where the hell was this album one year ago?!

The album is a collection of six songs that have been “reimagined as wedding songs for the LGBTQ community, celebrating the enduring and overwhelming power of love and music to unite” says the official press release.

The album features queer covers of classic love songs. Tracks include:

Bob Dylan – “He’s Funny That Way”

St. Vincent – “And Then She Kissed Me”

Kele Okereke – “My Guy”

Valerie June – “Mad About the Girl”

Benjamin Gibbard – “And I Love Him”

Kesha –“ I Need a Woman to Love”

My favorite track is Gibbard’s And I Love Him, which would have definitely been a top choice for one of our wedding songs.

Phyllis James, MGM Resorts’ Chief Diversity & Corporate Social Responsibility Officer, said:

We believe projects like this will help all of us reach a point where seeing the world through the lens of people who happen to be different from us becomes natural and commonplace. It is an immense honor for MGM Resorts to spearhead this inspirational project which celebrates LGBTQ dimensions of the universal emotion of love.

Each artist attached to the project has a personal connection to why they are involved.

While the album only has 6 tracks, let’s hope that his is the beginning of new form of love song that celebrates everyone and that can resonate in the hearts of lovers universally.

Fall in love all over again when you listen to Universal Love
